Dr. Zakir Hussain (February 8, 1897 - May 3, 1969) was the third President of India, whose tenure was from 13 May 1962 to 3 May 1969. Dr. Zakir Hussain was born on February 8, 1897 in the Dhanadhya Pathan family of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. After some time his father had come to live in Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 23, he became a member of the founding party of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Zakir Hussain was the third President and Chief Educationist of India. In 1920 he contributed in the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia and became its Vice-Chancellor. After attaining independence, he became Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh University and under his chair the 'University Education Commission' was also constituted. Apart from this, he was also associated with the Indian Press Commission, University Grants Commission, UNESCO, International Education Service and Central Board of Secondary Education. In 1962, he became Vice-President of India. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in the year 1963. In 1969, due to untimely demise, he could not complete his presidential term. Dr. Zakir Hussain was one of the greatest supporters of modern education in India and he established Jamia Millia Islamia in his leadership as a Central University in New Delhi, from which thousands of students have been studying in many subjects each year. Dr. Zakir Hussain also served as the Governor of Bihar and after that he remained the Vice President of the country before his political career ended, and later he became the third President of India.
Dr. Zakir Hussain was the first Muslim to become the President of India. Hussein has complied with Gandhi's appeal to the government of the country's youth to give away the government institutions. He helped establish the Muslim National University (later shifted to Delhi) in Aligarh and was its Vice Chancellor from 1926 to 1948. On the invitation of Mahatma Gandhi, he also became the Chairman of the National Commission for Primary Education, which was established in 1937 to create a Gandhian course for the schools. Hussein became Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in 1948 and after four years he entered the Rajya Sabha. In 1956-58 he lived in the Executive Committee of United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). In 1957, he was appointed the Governor of Bihar and in 1962 he was elected the Vice-President of India. As the official candidate of the Congress Party in 1967, he was elected president of India and remained posthumously till his death.

One day, he sat down with the brush and polishing at the university's door and brushing the shoes of every passing student. Seeing this, all the students were very embarrassed. He apologized to Dr. Hussein for his mistake and from next day all the students started wearing polished clothes in clean clothes and on shoes. In this way, the discipline was reinstated at the university.

In his inaugural speech on becoming President, he had said that entire India is my home and all of its residents are my family. He died on May 3, 1969. He was the first President of the country who died in office.
