Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is a city and a municipal board in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Fatehpur Sikri was built during the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar. Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was the capital of the Mughal Empire for only some 10 years. The Mughal Emperor Akbar built the city in honor of the Sufi Saint Salim Chishti. For about 15 years this city served as Akbar's capital. Fatehpur Sikri is known for its marvellous architecture. It boast of the architectural influences of various schools, including Persian, Rajasthani, Islamic, Hindu and Jain. It is because the artists for its construction were brought from all over the vast Mughal Empire. Various edifices noteworthy are: Panch Mahal is a magnificent five-story palace.

Tomb of Salim Chishti, which is a white marble shrine to the Sufi saint. Buland Darwaza, the Magnificent Gate is the highest gateway in the world, measuring more than 170 feet tall and about 115 feet wide. Char Chaman Tank, is a beautiful water body providing natural cooling at Fatehpur Sikri. The Char Chaman tank has a beauty all its own. Various tanks and artificial lakes and ponds have been the hallmark of the Mughal cities.

It lies very close to the Golden Triangle tours, which take in the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and the Red Fort of Delhi. Fatehpur Sikri covers a massive area of land, and exploring it is best done with a licensed guide.
