Swami Indra Kumar Gujral was sworn in as the 12th Prime Minister of India on Monday, April 21, 1997. Heavenly son Shri Avtar Narayan Gujral and late Mrs. Pushpa Gujral, Mr. Gujral M.A., B. Ph.D. And d. Lit (Hons. Causa). He was born on 4 December 1919 in Jhelum (in undivided Punjab). She and Mrs Shila Gujral were married on May 26, 1945.
Mr. Gujral belongs to the family of freedom fighters: both his parents participated in the freedom struggle in Punjab. At the age of eleven, he himself actively participated in the freedom struggle in 1931 and was arrested and severely beaten by the police for organizing the movement of small children in Jhelum city. In 1942, he went to jail during the Quit India Movement.

Prior to assuming the post of Prime Minister of India, Shri Gujral was External Affairs Minister from June 1, 1996 and took charge of the Ministry of Water Resources from June 28, 1996. She was Minister of Foreign Affairs during 1989--1990. From the 1976-1980, the USSR Ambassador of India for the Cabinet rank and organized the following Ministerial positions from 1967-1976:
