Lodhi Gardens

Lodhi Gardens is a historically important place to be visited in Delhi.It is actually a park spread over 90 acres which contains tombs of the famous Lodhis, an Afghan dynasty, who ruled parts of northern India from 1451 to 1526 AD. It mainly resembles the architectural works, during 15 century. After the Mughals defeated them the garden was under their custody but they preserved the site. Later during the British rule, Lady Willingdon, wife of Governor-General of India landscaped the plot and on inauguration it was named after her, Lady willingdon Park. After independence it was given the present name and presently it is under the preservation list of Archeological Survey of India.

Major attractions :

The Garden contains the tombs of Mohammed Shah and Sikander Lodhi, Gumad and Bara Gumad. The tomb of Mohammed Shah is the earliest tomb in this garden built by Ala-ud-din and the architecture is characterized by the octagonal chamber, with stone chhajjas on the roof and guldastas on the corners. In the middle of the Gardens is the Bara gumbad with a rubble-construct dome. It is not a tomb but a gate way to an attached three domed masjid. Opposite to the Bara Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad or Glass dome constructed using glazed tiles. Near by Sikander Lodhis tomb stands Athpula bridge built by Akbar. Most of the tombs are ornamented with hindu-style Chhatris around the central dome, numerous arches, verandas and sloping buttresses. It contains a rose garden which has around 5000 rose plants. More than that it has a Herbal Garden, Palm corner and Bamboo garden. It provides a good habitat for migratory and resident birds, which comes there in large numbers.
