Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, who became Prime Minister at the age of 40, was India's youngest prime minister and is probably one of the young politicians in the world who has led the government. When his mother Smt. Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister for the first time in 1966, she was eight years older than her. His great Nanaji Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was 58 years old when he started a long innings of 17 years as the first Prime Minister of Independent India.
The forerunner of generational change in the country, Shri Gandhi received the biggest mandate in the history of the country. After recovering from the grief of his mother, he ordered the elections for the Lok Sabha. In that election, Congress got popular vote in proportion compared to the last seven elections and the party achieved record 401 seats out of 508.
Such a wonderful start as a leader of 700 million Indians is considered notable in any situation. It is also amazing because they belonged to the political family whose four generations had served India during and after the freedom struggle, despite this Mr Gandhi was reluctant to enter politics and he was also late in politics done.
Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20th August, 1944 in Bombay. He was only three years old when India became independent and his grandfather became the first Prime Minister of independent India. His parents settled down from Lucknow to New Delhi. His father, Feroz Gandhi, became a Member of Parliament and who earned a reputation as a fearless and diligent MP.
Rajiv Gandhi spent his childhood with his grandfather in three idol houses where Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister's hostess. He went to Velham School of Dehradun for some time but soon he was sent to the residential Doon School located in the foothills of the Himalayas. There they had many friends with whom they had a lifetime friendship. Later, his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi was also sent to the same school where the two stayed together.
After leaving school, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, but soon he shifted to Imperial College in London. He studied mechanical engineering from there.
It was obvious that he had no interest in making his career in politics. According to his classmates he had many books of science and engineering, without books related to philosophy, politics or history. Although he was very much interested in music. He liked Western and Hindustani classical and modern music. He also had a passion for listening to photography and radio.
Air flight was his biggest passion. After returning home from England, he passed the Delhi Flying Club entrance examination and got the license of a commercial pilot. Soon he became the pilot of the domestic airline company Indian Airlines.
In Cambridge, he met Italian Sonia Meno, who was studying English at that time. He married in New Delhi in 1968. She stayed with her two children, Rahul and Priyanka at the residence of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in New Delhi. Despite such a stir around political activities, he continued to live his life.
But in 1980, the death of his brother Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash changed all the circumstances. He became the pressman to enter politics and cooperate with his mother in political work. Then many internal and external challenges came to light. He first opposed these pressures, but later he agreed with the argument given by him. He won the by-election of Amethi parliament of Uttar Pradesh, which was vacant due to his brother's death.
When India hosted Asian Games in November 1982, promises made before years of making stadium construction and other basic amenities were fulfilled. Mr. Gandhi was given the responsibility to complete all the work on time and to ensure that the games of any obstacle and imperfections can be organized. He performed this challenging task while demonstrating efficiency and uninterrupted coordination. Simultaneously, as a general secretary of the Congress, he worked with the same dignitaries, systematically and activating the party organization. Further difficult situations were ahead of them in which their personality was to be tested.
What can come to power in a more tragic and painful situation than Mr. Gandhi when he became the Congress President and the Prime Minister of the country after the brutal assassination of his mother on October 31, 1984. But despite being so sad personally, he discharged the national responsibility well with balance, dignity and restraint.
During the long election campaign throughout the month, Shri Gandhi traveled almost equal length of one and a half times of the Earth's perimeter and went to almost all parts of the country, conducted more than 250 meetings and met with millions of people.
With a serious but modern thinking and ability to make decisions, Shri Gandhi wanted to fulfill the country with the highest techniques of the world and as he repeatedly said that besides the purpose of maintaining the unity of India, besides his other main objectives One of the twenty-first century building of India.
