Rock Garden

Rock Garden or Nek Chand's rock Gardens is a sculpture garden situated in Chandigarh, India. The history of Rock garden is closely connected with the history of its founder and guardian Nek Chand. He started his construction in 1957. By constructing such a beautiful sculptural garden using the waste materials collected, he passed a big message to the world that nothing is unimportant, the waste material we through to the streets and surroundings are useful in one way or other.

Nek Chand showed the world that even the spare time of one person also be useful in dealing with waste materials. Nek Chand was a government official in Chadigarh state and it was his hobby in spare time, to collect waste materials and make some figures with it. As his collection grows he find it difficult to store in his house and find a secret suitable forest area to display his sculptures. He recycled the materials he collected in his own vision and preserved in a gorge in a forest which was designated as a land conservancy, where nothing could be build on. It had beautiful lake Sukhana and a waterfall.

The wonder of the story is that he could conceal this place from the authorities for eighteen years and by that time it has grown to a marvelous village with 12 acres of land with a lot of sculptures, carvings and concrete mansions. Walls of the caves were decorated with different images, waterfalls and fountains arranged in an exciting way to add beauty to village.. There were many sculptures of musicians, dancers, cartoon characters and animals. His work was in serious danger as it was an illegal act in the eyes of the authorities. They warned and tried to demolish the structure. But the amazing public support and the recognition of his talent by the Government prevented them from demolishing the site. In 1976 the government recognized the forest as a park and opened it for public. Nek chand was given the title of Sub-Divisional Engineer, Rock Garden with salary. The state provided every help to support the sophisticated work he did. 50 laborers helped him to complete his dream project. Now It has become a major tourist spot in Chandigarh, visited by more than 5000 people daily and is regarded as an epitome of creativity and innovation.
